महाकालेश्वर ज्योतिर्लिंग कथा उज्जयिनी नगरी में महान शिवभक्त तथा जितेन्द्रिय चन्द्रसेन नामक एक राजा थे. एक बार कुछ राजाओ ने मिलकर उनकी नगरी पर आक्रमण कर दिया . राजा ने उन्हें जीत लिया पर उन राजाओ ने असुर का सहारा लिया इस पर राजा चन्द्रसेन भगवान शिव की शरण में पहुँच गये. वे निश्छल मन से दृढ़ निश्चय के सथ उपवास-व्रत लेकर भगवान महाकाल की आराधना में जुट गये. तब भगवान शिव ने प्रकट होकर उस असुर का वध किया. उन दिनों उज्जयिनी में एक विधवा ग्वालिन रहती थी, जिसको इकलौता पुत्र था. वह इस नगरी में बहुत दिनों से रहती थी. वह अपने उस पाँच वर्ष के बालक को लेकर महाकालेश्वर का दर्शन करने हेतु गई. उसने देखा कि राजा चन्द्रसेन वहाँ बड़ी श्रद्धाभक्ति से महाकाल की पूजा कर रहे हैं. राजा के शिव पूजन का महोत्सव उसे बहुत ही आश्चर्यमय लगा. उसने पूजन को निहारते हुए भक्ति भावपूर्वक महाकाल को प्रणाम किया और अपने निवास स्थान पर लौट गयी. उस ग्वालिन माता के साथ उसके बालक ने भी महाकाल की पूजा का कौतूहलपूर्वक अवलोकन किया था. इसलिए घर वापस आकर उसने भी शिव जी का पूजन करने का विचार किया. वह एक सुन्दर-सा पत्थर ढूँढ़कर लाया और अपने निवास से कुछ ही दूरी पर किसी अन्य के निवास के पास एकान्त में रख दिया. उसने अपने मन में निश्चय करके उस पत्थर को ही शिवलिंग मान लिया. वह शुद्ध मन से भक्ति भावपूर्वक मानसिक रूप से गन्ध, धूप, दीप, नैवेद्य और अलंकार आदि जुटाकर, उनसे उस शिवलिंग की पूजा की. वह सुन्दर-सुन्दर पत्तों तथा फूलों को बार-बार पूजन के बाद उस बालक ने बार-बार भगवान के चरणों में मस्तक लगाया. बालक का चित्त भगवान के चरणों में आसक्त था और वह विह्वल होकर उनको दण्डवत कर रहा था. उसी समय ग्वालिन ने भोजन के लिए अपने पुत्र को प्रेम से बुलाया. उधर उस बालक का मन शिव जी की पूजा में रमा हुआ था, जिसके कारण वह बाहर से बेसुध था. माता द्वारा बार-बार बुलाने पर भी बालक को भोजन करने की इच्छा नहीं हुई और वह भोजन करने नहीं गया तब उसकी माँ स्वयं उठकर वहाँ आ गयी. माँ ने देखा - कि उसका बालक एक पत्थर के सामने आँखें बन्द करके बैठा है. वह उसका हाथ पकड़कर बार-बार खींचने लगी पर इस पर भी वह बालक वहाँ से नहीं उठा, जिससे उसकी माँ को क्रोध आया और उसने उसे ख़ूब पीटा. इस प्रकार खींचने और मारने-पीटने पर भी जब वह बालक वहाँ से नहीं हटा, तो माँ ने उस पत्थर को उठाकर दूर फेंक दिया. बालक द्वारा उस शिवलिंग पर चढ़ाई गई सामग्री को भी उसने नष्ट कर दिया. शिव जी का अनादर देखकर बालक ‘हाय-हाय’ करके रो पड़ा. क्रोध में आगबबूला हुई वह ग्वालिन अपने बेटे को डाँट-फटकार कर पुनः अपने घर में चली गई. जब उस बालक ने देखा कि भगवान शिव जी की पूजा को उसकी माता ने नष्ट कर दिया, तब वह बिलख-बिलख कर रोने लगा. देव! देव! महादेव! ऐसा पुकारता हुआ वह सहसा बेहोश होकर पृथ्वी पर गिर पड़ा. उसकी आँखों से आँसुओं की झड़ी लग गई. कुछ देर बाद जब उसे चेतना आयी, तो उसने अपनी बन्द आँखें खोल दीं. उस बालक ने आँखें खोलने के बाद जो दृश्य देखा, उससे वह आश्चर्य में पड़ गया. भगवान शिव की कृपा से उस स्थान पर महाकाल का दिव्य मन्दिर खड़ा हो गया था. मणियों के चमकीले खम्बे उस मन्दिर की शोभा बढा रहे थे. वहाँ के भूतल पर स्फटिक मणि जड़ दी गयी थी. तपाये गये दमकते हुए स्वर्ण-शिखर उस शिवालय को सुशोभित कर रहे थे. उस मन्दिर के विशाल द्वार, मुख्य द्वार तथा उनके कपाट सुवर्ण निर्मित थे. उस मन्दिर के सामने नीलमणि तथा हीरे जड़े बहुत से चबूतरे बने थे. उस भव्य शिवालय के भीतर मध्य भाग में (गर्भगृह) करुणावरुणालय, भूतभावन, भोलानाथ भगवान शिव का रत्नमय लिंग प्रतिष्ठित हुआ था.

उसकी माता भी भगवान शिव की कृपा प्राप्त कर चुकी थी. जब उस ग्वालिन ने उठकर देखा, तो उसे सब कुछ अपूर्व 'विलक्षण' सा देखने को मिला. उसके आनन्द का ठिकाना न रहा. उसने भावविभोर होकर अपने पुत्र को छाती से लगा लिया. अपने बेटे के भूतेश शिव के कृपा प्रसाद का सम्पूर्ण वर्णन सुनकर उस ग्वालिन ने राजा चन्द्रसेन को सूचित किया. निरन्तर भगवान शिव के भजन-पूजन में लगे रहने वाले राजा चन्द्रसेन अपना नित्य-नियम पूरा कर रात्रि के समय पहुँचे. उन्होंने भगवान शंकर को सन्तुष्ट करने वाले ग्वालिन के पुत्र का वह प्रभाव देखा. उज्जयिनि को चारों ओर से घेर कर युद्ध के लिए खड़े उन राजाओं ने भी गुप्तचरों के मुख से प्रात:काल उस अद्भुत वृत्तान्त को सुना. इस विलक्षण घटना को सुनकर सभी नरेश आश्चर्यचकित हो उठे. उन्होंने कहा कि राजा चन्द्रसेन महान शिव भक्त है, इसलिए इन पर विजय प्राप्त करना अत्यन्त कठिन है. ये सभी प्रकार से निर्भय होकर महाकाल की नगरी उज्जयिनी का पालन-पोषण करते हैं. जब इस नगरी का एक छोटा बालक भी ऐसा शिवभक्त है, और राजा चन्द्रसेन भी शिवभक्त है. ऐसे राजा के साथ विरोध करने पर निशचय ही भगवान शिव क्रोधित हो जाएँगे. शिव के क्रोध करने पर तो हम सभी नष्ट ही हो जाएँगे. इसलिए हमें इस नरेश से दुश्मनी न करके मेल-मिलाप ही कर लेना चाहिए, जिससे भगवान महेश्वर की कृपा हमें भी प्राप्त होगी- हनुमान जी ने प्रकट होकर उस बालक का भविष्य बताया कि यह बालक अब गोप वंश की कीर्ति को बढ़ाने वाला तथा उत्तम शिवभक्त हो गया है. भगवान शिव की कृपा से यह इस लोक के सम्पूर्ण भोगों का उपभोग करेगा और अन्त में मोक्ष को प्राप्त कर लेगा. इसी बालक के कुल में इससे आठवीं पीढ़ी में महायशस्वी नन्द उत्पन्न होंगे और उनके यहाँ ही साक्षात नारायण का प्रादुर्भाव होगा.वे भगवान नारायण ही नन्द के पुत्र के रूप में प्रकट होकर श्रीकृष्ण के नाम से जगत में विख्यात होंगे. यह गोप बालक भी, जिस पर कि भगवान शिव की कृपा हुई है, ‘श्रीकर’ गोप के नाम से विशेष प्रसिद्धि प्राप्त करेगा. — Mahakaleshvar jyotirling fiction
