वैधनाथ ज्योतिर्लिंग की कथा एक बार राक्षसराज रावण ने हिमालय पर जाकर शिवजी की प्रसन्नता के लिये घोर तपस्या की और अपने सिर काट-काटकर शिवलिंग पर चढ़ाने शुरू कर दिये. एक-एक करके नौ सिर चढ़ाने के बाद दसवाँ सिर भी काटने को ही शिवजी प्रसन्न होकर प्रकट हो गये. उन्होंने उसके दसों सिर ज्यों-के-ज्यों कर दिये और फिर वरदान मांगने को कहा. रावण ने लंका में जाकर उस लिंग को स्थापित करने के लिये उसे ले जाने की आज्ञा मांगी. शिवजी ने अनुमति तो दे दी, पर इस चेतावनी के साथ कि यदि मार्ग में इस पृथ्वी पर रख देगा तो वह वहीं अचल हो जाएगां अंतोगत्वा वहीं हुआ. रावण शिवलिंग लेकर चला, पर मार्ग में यहा चिताभूमि में आने पर उसे देव प्रेरणा से लघुशंका निवृत्ति की आवश्यकता हुई और वह उस लिंग को एक अहीर को थमा लघुशंका-निवृत्ति के लिये चला गया. जो अहीर का बालक था वे साक्षात् गणेश भगवान थे जो अहीर बनकर गौओं को लेकर रावण के सामने आ गए. और रावण के जाते ही अहीर बने गणेश जी ने शिवलिंग भूमिकर रख दिया. बस, फिर क्या था, लौटने पर रावण पूरी शक्ति लगाकर भी उसे न उखाड़ सका और निराश होकर मूर्ति पर अपना अंगूठा गड़ाकर लंका को चला गयां. इधर ब्रह्मा, विष्णु आदि देवताओं ने आकर उस शिवलिंग की पूजा की और शिवजी का दर्शन करके उनकी वहीं प्रतिष्ठा की और स्तुति करते हुए स्वर्ग चले गये. यह वैद्यनाथ-ज्योतिर्लिग महान् फलों का देनेवाला है. — The legend of vaidhnath jyotirling
