शिव तत्व का तात्पर्य है शिव का सिद्धांत। शिव तत्व को समझे बिना मानव जीवन का जगत के अन्य पक्षों से संबंध समझा नहीं जा सकता। भगवान शिव अनेक नामों और रूपों को सुंदर समन्वय हैं जैसे शंकर, शंभू, महेश। शिव तत्व हमें अत्यंत सुंदर तरीके से भगवान शिव के विरोधाभासी गुणों को स्पष्ट उजागर करता है। शिव संहारक भी हैं और उत्पन्न कर्ता भी। वे एक ही समय अज्ञानी भी हैं और ज्ञान के भंडार भी। वे चतुर भी हैं और दानी भी। उनके संगी साथी भूत, प्रेत, सांप इत्यादि हैं लेकिन वे ऋषियों संतों, देवताओं के भी आराध्य पुरुष हैं। शिव तत्व कल्याण का दर्शन है। इसी तत्व के मर्म को समझ कर हम समाज में सहचार्य एकात्मकता और सदगुणों का प्रचार कर सकते हैं। शिवपुराण के अनुसार गंगा की उत्पत्ति शिव जी की जटाओं से हुई थी और उनका नाम गंगाधर पड़ा था। शिव जी अपने तीसरे नेत्र से कामदेव को भी भस्म किया है। शिव जी के माथे पर अ‌र्द्ध चंद्र है, कंठ में सांप की माला और उनकी जटाओं में गंगा व चंद्रमा का निवास है। उनके हाथ में त्रिशूल, डमरू जैसी चीजें शोभायमान होती हैं। शिव जी ने समुद्र मंथन में निकले विष को जनकल्याण के लिए अपने कंठ में धारण कर लिया जिसकी वजह से उनका गला नीला पड़ गया और उनका नाम नीलकंठ पड़ा। सावन के महीने में शिव जी का महीना होता है और इस दौरान सच्ची श्रद्धा के साथ पूजा अर्चना करने वालों की मनोकामना भी पूर्ण होती है। शिव जी के विभिन्न अवतार में वृषभ, महेश, एकादश रुद्र, दिव्जेश्वर, गृहपति, नीलकंठ, दुर्वाषा, नटराज, ब्रहम्चारी, वैद्यनाथ, यतिनाथ, सुरेश्वर, गृहपति आदि हैं। शिव जी तीन नेत्रों वाले हैं इसीलिए उन्हें तीन पत्तों वाला बेल पत्र चढ़ाकर पूजा की जाती है। ओम नम: शिवाय:-शिव प्रसन्न होने वाले देव हैं- संसारैक निमित्ताय संसारैकविरोध्निे। नम: संसार रुपाय नि:संसाराय शम्भवे। सनातन धर्म में शिव का प्रमुख स्थान है। शिव: कल्याणकार:। शिव को तमोगुण प्रधान अर्थात् प्रलयंकारी भी माना गया है। शिव निरंतर विभूति को अपने शरीर पर लपेटते हैं। शिव जी कंठ में माला के समान सर्प को धारण करते हैं। शिव जी के तीन नेत्र हैं। उनकी जटाओं में गंगा और मुकुट में चन्द्रमा निवास करते हैं। उनके हाथ में डमरू तथा त्रिशूल सुशोभित है। त्रिशूल सत्व, रज, तमद्धगुणों का प्रतीक है। शिव व्याघ्र चर्म को वस्त्रा की तरह धारण करते हैं। शिव को पंचानन भी कहा जाता है। उनके अनेक रुप हैं। वे विभिन्न नए रुपों एवं नामों से जाने जाते हैं। सामान्य रुप से शिव जी को लिघ्ग के रुप में मंदिरों में स्थापित किया गया है। शिव की प्रतिमा प्राय: ध्यान मुद्रा अथवा ताण्डव नृत्य के रुप में देखी जाती है। वस्तुत: शिव का अर्थ है शुभ, मंगलमय। शास्त्रों में शिव शब्द का प्रयोग अन्य देवी देवताओं के लिए भी किया गया है। ग्वेद में शिव शब्द का प्रयोग इन्द्र के लिए किया गया है। त्रिनयन/त्रयम्बक - शिव की तीसरी आंख से कामदेव भस्म हुआ था इसलिए इन्हें त्रिनयन/त्रयम्बक कहते हैं। अधर््चन्द्र-शिव जी के मस्तिष्क पर अधर््चन्द्र है इसलिए उनका नाम चन्द्रशेखर भी है। वैदिक साहित्य में चन्द्रदेवता सोम तथा रुद्र ये समान ही हैं। विभूति-भस्म का श्मशान भस्मद्ध शिव जी के सम्पूर्ण अंग में लेप होता है। कुछ लोग भैरव को भी शिव स्वरुप मानते हैं। विभूति विभूषण भी शिवजी का एक नाम है। जटाजूट-शिव के सिर पर जटाओं का जूड़ा बंधे होने से शिवजी को जटी कपर्दी भी कहते हैं। नीलकण्ठ-समुद्र मन्थन के समय हलाहल विष निकला था जिसको पीने से शिव का कण्ठ नीला पड़ गया अत: उन्हें नीलकण्ठ कहते हैं। गंगाधर-शिव पुराण के अनुसार गंगा की उत्पत्ति के समय गंगा जी को पहले शिव ने अपनी जटाओं में धरण किया अत: उन्हें गंगाधर कहते हैं। गोस्वामी तुलसी दास ने विनय पत्रिका में लिखा है कि :- शिव सबसे बडे़ दानी देवता तो हैं ही साथ ही भोले भी हैं। जो लोग शिव की उपासना करते हैं शिव उनमें भेदभाव न रखते हुए उनक दुख दूर करते हैं। शिव का स्मरण मानव मात्रा के कल्याण का सर्वोत्तम साधन है। शिव का नाम आशुतोष भी है। आशु का अर्थ होता है शीघ्र और तोष का अर्थ होता है प्रसन्न अर्थात शिव शीघ्र प्रसन्न होने वाले देव हैं। — OM damp: shivay: Shiva element
